Operations Dashboard Design: What to Show and What to Hide
How to design an operations dashboard that helps teams act instead of creating metric noise.
Start with decisions
List the decisions made each day or week, then choose indicators for exceptions, ageing work, capacity, service levels, and unresolved issues.
Show context
Every metric needs a definition, owner, time range, and threshold. See product engineering or talk through your system.
Design the action behind each metric
A count of overdue jobs should open the jobs that need attention. Show when the data was last updated and distinguish a genuine zero from a failed data connection. Review the screen with the person responsible for acting on it; remove information that does not support a decision.
- Show the data source and refresh time.
- Link exceptions to the records that need action.
- Use labels and symbols alongside status colors.
