Automate the boring work.
Keep the judgment.
Good automation removes repetition. It does not remove accountability. Here is a safer way to find the first workflow worth automating.
Start with friction, not a tool
Do not begin with a list of AI products. Begin with a task your team repeats often: qualifying an enquiry, moving data between systems, preparing a weekly report, or routing a support request.
Write down the trigger, the steps, the handoffs, and the decision that still needs a person. This simple map exposes whether the problem is automation, unclear ownership, or a broken process.
Use a human checkpoint where risk rises
Low-risk steps can run automatically. High-impact decisions should have a review queue, an audit trail, and a clear way to undo the result. That is especially important when a workflow touches customer records, money, access, or sensitive information.
- Automate data collection before automating decisions.
- Show the source behind an AI-generated answer.
- Log failures instead of silently retrying forever.
- Give a person a clear approve, edit, or reject action.
Measure the workflow after launch
Track time saved, error rate, completion rate, and the number of manual interventions. If the automation creates more checking work than it removes, it is not finished. A small, measurable workflow is more valuable than a dramatic demo.
